    Abstract: 1387048 1,4-Dioxane BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 7 July 1972 [8 July 1971] 31929/72 Heading C2C Anhydrous 1,4-dioxane is prepared by mixing a catalyst consisting of SiF 4 , BF 3 or an adduct formed from BF 3 and 1,4-dioxane, with liquid ethylene oxide at a temperature of from -50‹ C. to 0‹ C. and keeping the mixture at a temperature of from -25‹ C to + 10‹ C. for 1-10 hours. A small amount of 1,3-dioxolane may also be formed.

    Abstract: Benzoylbenzoic acid prepn. Oxidation of indanes of formula:- (R1, R2, R3 are each alkyl; R1 and/or R3 can be H), oxidised with HNO3 and/or Cr-VI compounds gives, simply and economically, better yields of high-purity o-benzoylbenzoic acid (valuable for syntheses, especially for anthraquinone) without formation of considerable quantities of o-acetylbenzophenone. Temperature for HNO3 oxidation is 50 - 250 degrees C. Less than 1.5 x stoichiometric requirement of Cr-VI compounds is preferred. In a preferred method, at least 10% stoichiometric requirement of alkaline bichromate is added simultaneously to the HNO3.
