Abstract: A process for the production of acetylene by partial oxidation of gaseous or vaporized hydrocarbons and rapid cooling of the reaction gas by the introduction of water into the gas stream comprises introducing water into the gas stream in the form of undivided jets and so selecting conditions that for a gas stream with a dynamic pressure (PD) and a depth of penetration (a) of water into the gas stream, a diameter (d) of the jets and the water pressure (PW) immediately at the outlet openings of the water nozzles, the numerical values of the expression PW/PD x d/a lie between 1 and 15 In a typical example, 20,000 normal metres per hour of methane are heated to 540 DEG C. in a preheater and 1150 normal cubic metres per hour of oxygen are heated to 540 DEG C. in a second preheater. After thorough mixing the gases enter through parallel channels into a reaction chamber in which the methane reacts with the oxygen with the formation of a flame. The diameter of the reaction gas at the outlet is 40 mms. and the pressure (PD) is 2.2 X 10-3 atmospheres. The reaction gas is rapidly cooled and a mixture obtained which contains 7.82% by volume of acetylene and 4.28 grams per cu. metre of carbon black.
