Abstract: Plant-compatible copper ammine salts (I) of organic monocarboxylic (at least 4C), dicarboxylic or polycarboxylic acids are new. Pref. acids are 4-20, esp. 5-12C fatty acids; dicarboxylic acids with up to 12, esp. 6C; and polymeric acids, particularly poly(acrylic or methacrylic) acids. The polymeric acids may also contain corresp. ester residues, e.g. they comprise 60-100% acrylic and/or methacrylic acids, plus up to 40% corresp. esters. Also claimed are aq. solns. of (I). (I) are esp. useful as fungicides and are applied to the plants as an aq. soln. which dries to give a coating of metal poly-salt which is insoluble or only sparingly soluble in water (and therefore having a long-lasting effect). They are esp. useful against Phytophthora infestans, Plasmopara viticola, Pseudoperonospora humuli, Cercospora beticola, C.musae, Venturia inequalis, Exobasidium vexans and Hemileia vastatrix. (I) also have excellent activity against phytopathogenic bacteria (e.g. Erwinia amylovora on pear trees) and can be used to inhibit algae, moulds, moss, lichen, on plants, stone structures, plaster, paint, wood, etc.

Abstract: Addn. of at least the stoichiometric amt. of >=15- or 6-member cyclic urea derivs. opt. substd. with OH, OMe, OEt, Me or Et, or 2-oxo oxazolidines, to aq. micro-capsule dispersions at 10-60 degrees, removes free formaldehyde used to harden the capsule walls. Esp. useful for micro-capsule dispersions used for coating copying papers. Almost all the HCHO is removed in relatively short times, e.g. usually >95% in 10 h., compared with 50% removed by addn. of urea. Formation of NaOH, as when NaHSO3 is added to react with the HCHO, is avoided. In an example, 2-oxo imidazolidine (ethylene urea) is added to an aq. microcapsule dispersion. After 1 hr. no smell of HCHO is detectable.

Abstract: New fungicides contain aqueous solutions of (a) a copper ammine salt and (b) the ammonium salt of a polymer consisting of 60-100% acrylic acid or methacrylic acid and 0-40% acrylic or methacrylic acid ester. The fungicides pref. contain 0.01-10% Cu, pref. in the form of the ammine complex. The polymer is in the form of its water-soluble ammonium salt and may be produced by usual polymerisation procedures. Fungicidal agents for use in plant protection (esp. against Phytophthora infestans on tomatoes and potatoes, Plasmopara viticola on vines, Pseudoperonospora humid on hops, Cercospora beticola on beet, Cercospora musae on bananas, Venturia inaequalis on apples, Exobasidium vexans on tea, and Hemileia vastatrix on coffee), in antifouling paints, and wherever undesirable growth by organisms is to be prevented. When the agents are applied, drying out of the solution leads to reaction between the polyanion of the polymer and the copper ammine complex to form a crosslinked water-insoluble metal poly-salt which shows good adhesion and retains its fungicidal effect for a prolonged period. The fungicidal activity is greater than that of known copper fungicides.

Abstract: Hardening of microcapsules, walls of which consists of synthetic and/or natural polymers contg. aldehyde-reactive gps., is achieved by using aldehydes, in aq. or water-contg. dispersion of suspension, at 20-100 degrees C, pref. at pH 3-11. Aldehydes used are prepd. by reacting (i) 1 mole 3-8C omega, omega', dialdehydes and/or their full acetals with 1-3C alcohols with (ii) 4-6 moles HCHO. Microcapsule dispersions may be used for coating paper. Hardening can take place in acid or alkaline pH. Microcapsule dispersions obtd. are milky-white. Aq. dispersions of microcapsules resist fungus attack, without addn. of fungicides.
