Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an economical and positive method and an apparatus for removing a hydrocarbon from a waste alkali derived from an alkali scrubber used for refining a decomposition gas within a thermal decomposition unit for thermally decomposing a saturated hydrocarbon. SOLUTION: The method for removal of a hydrocarbon from a waste alkali comprises contacting a waste alkali countercurrently with a stripping gas to absorb a hydrocarbon in at least one column, wherein the stripping is carried out in a tray column provided with a cascade tray.

Abstract: Removing hydrocarbons from the waste liquor of the alkali wash in plants for splitting saturated hydrocarbons comprises counter-currently contacting the waste liquor in a cascading plate column (20) with a stripping gas which absorbs the hydrocarbons. An Independent claim is also included for an apparatus for removing hydrocarbons from the waste liquor of the alkali wash in plants for splitting saturated hydrocarbons. Preferred Features: The waste liquor is fed into the column via bent cascade plates (21). The stripping gas is a fuel gas containing methane. Long chain hydrocarbons such as C5+-hydrocarbons and aromatics such as benzene are removed.
