Abstract: 1,046,797. Laminates and laminating. BADISCHE - ANILIN - & SODA - FABRIK A.G. Aug. 20, 1963 [Sept. 1, 1962], No. 32848/63. Heading B5N. A laminate of a polyethylene sheet and a polypropylene sheet is biaxially stretched in the temperature range between the crystalline melting point and 20‹ C. below this point. Preferably the polypropylene has a viscosity of 1À5 to 3 (100 ml/g.) measured in 0À1% decahydronaphthalene solution at 130‹ C. and the polyethylene has a density between 0À98 and 0À90 g/cm. 3 and a melt index of MI 2 . 190 = 0À1 to 5. The laminate may be produced by extruding isotactic polypropylene and polyethylene from concentric dies and blowing up the tubular double-walled film so formed, then cutting, then biaxially stretching the resulting sheet. Alternatively the layers may be extruded as flat sheets from a slot die. Two strip laminates may be bonded with the polyethylene surfaces contacting.

Abstract: Polymers of tertiary butyl esters of monocarboxylic acids which contain one ethylenic double bond may be expanded by heating above their sofetning and decomposition ranges so that isobutylene is split off and expands the polymers. The polymers may be homopolymers of tertiary butyl acrylate and tertiary butyl methacrylate and copolymers of these monomers with vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride and crosslinking agents such as divinylbenzene. The polymers may be mixed with other polymers, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride and polyisobutylene; plasticisers, e.g. phthalic acid esters; and synthetic rubbers, e.g. copolymers of butadiene and acrylonitrile. Expansion may be effected by treating with steam or hot, non-solvent liquids, by infra-red heating or high frequency heating and the products used for heat and sound insulation.ALSO:Polymers of tertiary butyl esters of monocarboxylic acids which contain one ethylenic double band may be expanded by heating above their softening and decomposition ranges so that isobutylene is split off and expands the polymers.
