Abstract: Prepn. of aq. polyisocyanate emulsions involves dispersing or emulsifying the polyisocyanates in water in the presence of an emulsifier based on a polyglycol of molecular wt. 4,000-20,000, or a polyvinyl alcohol of molecular wt. 5,000-100,000. The polyisocyanate is pref. the phosgenated reaction product of aniline and formaldehyde. The emulsion can also be prepd. in the additional presence of a polypeptide. The emulsions are used for the glueing together of wood chip panels.

Abstract: Isobutyraldehyde-phenol polycondensates are made by condensing isobutyraldehyde (I) with a phenol (II) in a ratio (I)/(II) of 0.6-0.9:1, in the presence of an acid catalyst comprising a phosphorus halide, H2SO4, an aromatic acid or HCl. Excess (I) is then distilled off. The reaction is carried out either by adding the (I) gradually to the (II) according to the conversion, until excess (I) has been added, or the (I) and anII) are added simultaneously to the reactor or are previously mixed. Use of the stated catalysts and conditions allows poly-condensates of (I) and (II) to be made without the formation of large amts. of low molecular material, as in previous processes. The prods. are useful tackifiers in unvulcanised (natural)rubber, as components in adhesives, as sand core binders and as binders for wood fibre boards.

Abstract: Isobutyraldehyde-phenol novolak condensates, (I), having mol. ratio aldehyde: pneol >1, are prepd. by adding the phenol to excess isobutyraldehyde in the presence of a P halide, H2SO4, an aromatic sulphonic acid or HCl, as acid catalyst. Phenol addn. advantageously takes place in proportion to conversion. The resin is pref. neutralised, esp. with NH3, before removing excess isobutyraldehyde, to prevent the formation of decompsn. prods. (I) are pref. used as tackifiers esp. for natural rubber and as chipboard binders; and may also be used in the prepn. of adhesive mixts., wood glues, sand core binders and as age-protective agents. Repeatable prepnd. results are achieved. On use as tackifiers, (I) highly increase adhesive power.

Abstract: The use of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-anilino-3-ethyl-2- methylquinoline (I) as rubber additive is claimed. In an example a blend of 100 pts. smoked sheets, 40 pts. C black, 3 pts. aromatic plasticiser, 0.75 pt. paraffin, 1.5 pts. stearic acid, 5 pts. ZnO, 2.5 pts. S and 1 pt. benzothiazyl-2 -cyclohexylsulphenamide was treated with no antioxidant or with 3 pts. phenyl-beta-naphthylamine, 2,2'-methylene-bis (4-methyl-6-tert.-butylphenol) (II), 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,2- dihydroquinoline or (I). (I) was generally about as effective as (II) and more effective in the Mooney scorch test. (I) is an excellent stabiliser, esp. against thermal ageing, and is readily available.

The product is a starting material for the manufacture of dyes, crop protection agents and plastics, especially nylons and polyurethanes.

Abstract: Co-condensates are prepared by condensing from 0.8 to 2.0 moles of butyraldehyde with 1 mole of a phenol at from 80 DEG to 220 DEG C. with the addition, before, during or after the condensation, of from 5 to 50% by weight, based on the mixture of phenol and butyraldehyde, of one or more thermoplastics containing functional groups, which reacts with phenol, butyraldehyde or the phenol-butyraldehyde resin under the condensation conditions. The co-condensates are used as hot-melt adhesives and as binders for nonwovens.
