Abstract: 1521716 Aqueous dispersion of polymers based on non-tertiary allyl acrylates BASF AG 12 Dec 1975 [14 Dec 1974] 50975/75 Heading C3P A polymer made up of, by weight (a) 70- 90% of a non-tertiary C8 alkyl acrylate, (b) 4-12% of methyl methacrylate, (c) 4-12% of a vinyl ester of a C2-4 carboxylic acid, (d) 1- 5% of acrylonitrile, (e) 0À5-3% of a hydroxy C2-5 alkyl (meth)acrylate, and (f) 0À5-3% of an alpha,#-olefinically unsaturated mono- or di-carboxylic acid or a monoester of such a dicarboxylic acid, is prepared by conventional emulsion polymerization to a K value of 74 to 90 in aqueous medium containing as emulsifying agent a sulphated and alkoxylated fatty alcohol, fatty amine or alkyl phenol. Component (a) may also contain other non-tertiary alkyl acrylates whose homopolymers have glass temperatures below -30‹ C. and component (f) may also contain vinyl sulfonic acid or a salt thereof. Uses.- As pressure sensitive adhesives when coated on a suitable backing.

Abstract: An aqueous solution of a copolymer which greatly retards the polymerisation of styrene in aqueous medium is obtained by emulsion copolymerisation of predominant amounts of vinyl acetate and methyl acrylate and secondary amounts of acrylic acid, monoolefinically unsaturated sulphoalkyl esters or amides and vinyl sulphonate, and partial hydrolysis of the resultant copolymer emulsion.

Abstract: Prodn. of latex foam coatings involves coating a flat substrate with a thin layer of a foamed aq. butadiene-styrene copolymer dispersion and drying the foam at 100-200 degrees C, with crosslinking with a urea- and/or melamine-HCHO precondensate. The novel feature is that the aq. dispersion used contains an anionic emulsifier and a copolymer of 40-60(wt.)% butadiene, 30-40% styrene, 5-20% alkyl acrylate, with a 4-8C, non-tert, alkyl gp., 1.5-5% 3-5C alpha, beta-monoolefinically unsatd. carboxylic acid and 0-2% (meth)acrylamide. The coating are useful on textile floor coverings. The wet foam produced from the dispersion has a more acceptable odour than that from the usual butadiene/styrene copolymer dispersions and gives more resilient coatings.
