Abstract: Water soluble or dispersible polyvinyl alcohol derivative has polymerizable hydroxyl and olefinic side groups. Water soluble or dispersible polyvinyl alcohol derivative has polymerizable side groups comprising 60-99 mol% free hydroxyl groups, 1-15 mol.% groups of formula -O-CH(R1)-COH(R2)-R3 or -O-C(R2)(R3)-C(OH)(H)-R1 and 0-30 mol% other groups. R3 = olefinic group. An Independent claim is included for the preparation of the above PVOH derivative by reacting a PVOH with a plasticizer and then a compound with olefinic groups and an epoxide group in the presence of a nitrogen-containing organic base.
