Abstract: Purificn. of waste water contaminated with organic impurities comprises treatment with 2 or more sequential columns of active charcoal, the first (at least) of which is supplied with air or an oxygen-contg. gas, esp. pure oxygen. Pref. the gas- treated columns are operated at up to 100, esp. 20-80, deg. C and the gas treatment is esp. carried out in a fluidised bed of charcoal. Treatment with the gas reduced the amt. of charcoal which needs to be regenerated and thus lowers charcoal losses. The degree of purifcn. reached is as good as that acheived with other methods and often better, so that additional purificn. stages are not required.

Abstract: Difficult sluges such as those from sewage installations, water purification systems, hydroxide and titanium dioxide sludges, etc., which are conditioned and/or dewatered by freezing and thawing on heat exchanging surfaces chilled with a refrigerant and then reheated, are processed by pressing out all that has thawed between the still frozen and the heat-exchanging surfaces and, only when the sludge has fully thawed out, is a condenser of normal type set on to condense the refrigerant. By removal of the heat-insulating thawed-out fluid from the zone between frozen and heat-exchanging surfaces, the condensation temperature of the refrigerant and thus running costs of the refrigeration plant are considerably reduced. By combining conditioning and dewatering in one operation, the economics of the process are improved.

Abstract: The production of combustion gas containing little or no carbon black by mixing a starting mixture of oxygen and methanol with more oxygen in specific proportions, igniting the mixture thus prepared and incompletely burning the methanol in the flame formed. The gas may be used advantageously in all cases where deposition of soot would be troublesome. It may be used with advantage for heating catalysts in catalytic syntheses, for example silver catalysts to be used for catalyzing the reaction of methanol with oxygen to form formaldehyde.

Abstract: Waste water and sewage, contg. biodegradable impurities, are treated in >=1 enclosures with dissolved oxygen and activated sludge. The contact between these three reacting materials is intensified by increasing the number of interfaces and by shortening the diffusion paths in the sludge floccules. Injectors are used to this effect with a liq. nozzle an annular, concentric nozzle for the gas and an impulse exchange tube. The jet of liq. leaves the nozzle at a speed of 29m/sec. and sets up a shear gradient in the activated sludge; the air bubbles are finely divided and at the same time the sludge is sucked into the zone of the jet and is intensely mixed in the tube. The sludge leaving the latter is satd. with oxygen and the gas it contains causes it to rise in the form of a bubbling column to the surface of the activated sludge, giving up its oxygen proportionally to the depth of immersion of the injector and the oxygen content of the gas. The quantity of sludge which can be treated per unit of vol. of a biological settlement plant per day can be increased by 100% as compared with known processes.
