The pure maleic anhydride is withdrawn laterally and the aqueous condensate is recycled to the offgas scrubber.

Abstract: 1478525 Maleic anhydride recovery BASF AG 8 Nov 1974 [9 Nov 1973] 48379/74 Heading C2C Maleic-anhydride present in an effluent containing up to 40 wt. per cent maleic anhydride obtained by scrubbing, with water, the off-gas from the production of phthalic anhydride by catalytic-oxidation of xylene, with air, is recovered by evaporating the effluent solution, in one or more stages, at 40-150‹ C. under 50- 760 mm. Hg to a water content of less than 10 wt. per cent, heating the concentrate to 120- 180‹ C. under 100-600 mm. Hg in a thin-film or falling film evaporator, cooling the resulting maleic anhydride vapours to 110-140‹ C. and distilling the condensed maleic anhydride in such a manner that pure maleic anhydride is removed laterally and the volatiles are removed overhead, all the aqueous condensate obtained being returned to the off-gas scrubber.
