Abstract: Process for the preparation of alkyl 2-alkyl-4-fluoromethylthiazolecarboxylates of the formula I in which R is alkyl, R is difluoromethyl or trifluoromethyl and R is alkyl, by reacting thiocarboxamides of the formula II in which R has the abovementioned meaning with alkyl 2-chloro-4-fluoroacetoacetates of the formula III in which R and R have the abovementioned meanings, in an aprotic solvent at temperatures of below 100@C and reacting the product with a dehydrating agent at temperatures of below 80@C, if appropriate in the presence of bases.
