Abstract: A process for the selective hydrogenation of compounds containing at least one aromatic group and epoxy group with hydrogen in the presence of a ruthenium-containing catalyst. The catalyst is a homogeneous ruthenium catalyst prepared by reduction of a ruthenium compound using a metal having a redox potential of -0.75 to -2.5 volts, a borohydride, aluminium hydride, aluminium alkyl compound, lithium alkyl or aryl-compound in the presence of an ether.

Abstract: The aromatic gp. of an organic molecule contg. an aromatic gp. and an epoxy gp. is hydrogenated using hydrogen in the presence of a ruthenium-contg. catalyst and 0.2-10 wt.% water wrt. reaction components. Pref. the catalyst comprises ruthenium hydroxide. Pref. di(p-glycidoxylphenyl) methane or 2,2-di(p-glycidoxylphenyl)propane is hydrogenated. The reaction may be carried out at 40-70 deg.C.
