Abstract: Pigments of the composition BiVO4xxBi2MoO6xyBi2WO6, in which x and y have values from 0 to 3, are prepared by acidifying a joint solution of a bismuth(III) salt, a vanadate and a molybdate to a pH of less than 0, and increasing the pH of the acidic solution at temperatures of 20 to 95 DEG C to values of 0.1 to 3.5 by means of alkaline solutions which may contain a tungsten(VI) compound dissolved therein. The precipitation product and the reaction solution are allowed to stand at temperatures of 50 to 100 DEG C for 30 to 120 minutes before the precipitation product is separated off from the reaction solution, washed, and, if desired, dried and treated at temperatures of 300 to 800 DEG C.

Abstract: Iron oxide black pigments having improved acid resistance are obtained by treating them in aqueous suspension for 30 minutes to 200 hours at pHs from 0.5 to 14 and temperatures from 20 to 100 DEG C. The pigments aftertreated in this way are suitable for the colouring of cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and foodstuffs.
