Abstract: The invention comprises dyes of formula where R1 is alkylene or 2-6 C atoms, chloroalkylene of 3-4 C atoms or cyanoalkylene of 4 C atoms, R2 is alkyl of 1-6 C atoms, cyanoalkyl of 2-4 C atoms, chloroalkyl of 1-4 C atoms or R5OY where R5 has the values of R1 and Y is H, alkyl of 1-3 C atoms, hydroxyalkyl of 2-3 C atoms or cyanoalkyl of 2-4 C atoms, R3 is H, Me, Et, Cl, CF3 or CH3CONH, R4 is H, OMe or OEt, X is H, alkyl of 1-3 C atoms, hydroxyalkyl of 2-3 C atoms and cyanoalkyl of 2-4 C atoms and, when R1 is alkylene, R2 alkyl or hydroxyalkyl and R3 H, Me, Et, Cl or CF3, X may also be an acyl residue of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid of 1-4 C atoms and R6 is Me, Et, C6H5, cyclohexyl, tolyl, chlorphenyl, nitrophenyl or where R1, R2, R3 and R4 and X are as above and R7 is ethylene or phenylene. The dyes are made by diazotising an appropriate aminothiadiazole and coupling with the required substituted aniline component. Diazotisation and coupling are effected in nonaqueous solvents, mixtures of anhydrous acetic and propionic acid being preferred, diazotisation being effected with nitrosyl sulphuric acid in sulphuric acid. Preferably the diazo component is formed by treating a 1-acyl-thiosemicarbazide with sulphuric acid and diazotised and coupled without isolation. The dyes colour textile materials of cellulose2 1/2 - and tri-acetate, synthetic polyamides and polyesters, polymers and copolymers of acrylonitrile and polyvinyl chloride. Examples are provided of the preparation of the dyes and their use in dyeing cellulose acetate and synthetic polyamides and polyesters in shades of red, orange and bluish-red.
