A calendering apparatus comprises a plurality of vertically aligned rollers 1-4, a hopper 21 adjacent the first nip and a clearing means which removes excess material from the last nip and feeds it via a plate back to the hopper. The clearing means comprises an adjustable twoedged blade 7 reciprocated along the final nip by a chain and sprocket mechanism driven by a motor 9 controlled by switches.
