Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain a mechanized liquid absorption measuring instrument by providing a grasping device, a balance, a humidifying device composed of a metallic cylinder and paper, and a blotting device having upper and lower cardboards surrounding a sample and a blotting roller at continuous working positions. CONSTITUTION: At a position I, the negative-pressure grasper 4 of the instrument 1 for measuring liquid absorption of paper takes out a paper sample 3 and, at a second position II, the grasper 4 puts the sample 3 on the edge of a pipe 5 having a hole 6. At a third position III, the grasper 7 of the rotating plate 8 of the instrument 1 places the sample 3 on the plate 15 of an electronic balance 9 together with the grasper 4. After measured values are stored, the grasper 7 carries the sample 3 to a fourth position IV. A working cylinder 19 brings the plate 15 into close contact with a swingable metallic cylinder 10, pours water in the cylinder 10 in a container 7, brings the water into contact with the sample 3. A driving device 11 discharges the water by swinging the container 17 and an arm 13. On a table, the sample 3 is put between blotting papers 23 and 28 stretched between rolls and, after a blotting process, the sample 3 is sent to a table 37 and taken out and carried to a balance by means of the grasper 7. The liquid absorption of the sample 3 is measured from the preceding and succeeding measured values. When this constitution is used, the measurement can be mechanized fully.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To form paper having homogeneous appearance and good tissue by computing and determining the addition amounts of stock variable components which influence the retention and flocculation of stock in accordance with specific equations. CONSTITUTION: The practical numerical values of the flocculation and retention are monitored by the continuous measurement of suspensions and the maximum limit amounts at which the retention-influencing stock variable compositions (X1 ,...Xn ) can be added are determined by equation I from the predetermined permissible maximum flocculation degree Y2 and the typical numerical values (X1 ,...Xn ) of the stock suspensions. For example, the beating degree X1 , pH value X2 , alum amount X3 and retention aid amount X4 and the total stock holding Y1 and flocculation degree Y2 relating to a loading amount X5 are respectively given by equation II and equation III. The retention aid amount and alum amount of each of the respective numerical values and the respective combinations of the variable amounts are selected by both equations in such a manner that the flocculation degree does not exceed, for example, 1.5 and that the maximum possible retention of the respective cases may be rendered.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To always surely take up flat bodies one by one regardless of the property of the flat body by interposing a sheet formed of air impermeable material between the flat bodies. CONSTITUTION: Flat bodies such as paper or textile sheets or web are piled with a sheet of synthetic resin or metal as an alternate interlayer. Subsequently, the respective flat bodies are sucked with the intervening sheet by a vacuum lift to be fed to a processing device such as a size cutter or the like. After that, pressure reduction of the vacuum lift can be released to separate the flat body from the sheet from each other.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To obtain an antifoam which maintains its effect even at an elevated temp. by adding a specific fatty alcohol, alcohol ester of carboxylic acid and any of an alkylene oxide adduct to the alcohol, wax and carnauba wax to the antifoam. CONSTITUTION: Any of the >=28C fatty alcohol, the ester of the 1-22C carboxylic acid and >=28C alcohol, the 2-4C alkylene oxide adduct to the >=28C alcohol, the polyethylene wax of a mol.wt. >=2000, the carnauba wax, the montan ester was, the montanic acid wax and their salts is added as the component (d) at 5 to 50 wt.% to (a) the 12-26C alcohol obtainable by an oxo synthesis process or Ziegler process, (b) the fatty acid ester of 12-22C carboxylic acid and monovalent to treatment 1-18C alcohol, (c) a hydrocarbon, such as white oil. The mixture is prepd. as the oil-in-water emulsion from which the antifoam is produced.
