Abstract: This disclosure is directed to a black effect pigment and a method of forming said pigment. The pigment comprises a platy substrate coated with Sn02 and/or Sn02 hydrates and Fe304 with an optional coating of metal oxides such as Si02, Ti02, Zr02 and Zn02. The deposition of the Sn02 and/or Sn02 hydrates onto the substrate improves the adhesion and prepares the substrate surface for deposition of the iron oxides onto the platy surface, especially mica surfaces. While the pigment may be used in such applications as coating, powder coating, printing ink, plastic, ceramic material, glass, cosmetic formulation, laser marking pigment, pigment composition or dry preparation, the pigment is especially suitable for cosmetic applications.

Abstract: Un pigmento de efecto negro que comprende a) al menos una capa parcial de SnO2 y/o SnO2 hidratado sobre un sustrato en placa, b) al menos un recubrimiento parcial de Fe3O4, y c) opcionalmente, una capa adicional de óxido metálico, en el que el recubrimiento al menos parcial de Fe3O4 puede contener además hidróxido férrico y Fe2O3, y en el que la capa o capas de SnO2 y/o de SnO2 hidratado varían en un peso de 0.5 a 4% en peso con base en el peso total del pigmento de efecto negro, y el recubrimiento de Fe3O4 oscila entre 20 y 70% en peso con base en el peso total del pigmento de efecto negro.

Abstract: This invention is directed to a method of modifying the refractive index of multilayer thin films structure comprising high refractive and low refractive index layers, where the high refractive and low refractive index layers are of the same material, the method comprises a) depositing a first layer of film of a refractive index on a substrate; b) depositing a second layer of film having a different refractive index onto the first layer of film; and c) depositing a third layer of film having a different refractive index from the second layer of film onto the second layer of film, and compositions thereof. In certain embodiments, this multilayer thin film structure of this invention is directed to decorative applications.
