Abstract: The invention relates to a process for manufacturing a hydrophobic cellulosic material, which comprises the steps of (a) providing a cellulosic material, which is based on cellulosic fibers, wherein the fibers possess hydroxyl groups at their surface; (b) reacting the material from step (a) with an aliphatic carboxylic acid chloride or a mixture, which comprises aliphatic carboxylic acid chlorides, in supercritical carbon dioxide; (c) separating the reacted material from step (b) from the reaction to obtain the hydrophobic cellulosic material.
