Abstract: Described are aqueous polymer dispersions and a method for producing them. The polymer dispersions comprise polymer particles having an average particle diameter of greater than 200 nm, monomodal particle size distribution, and uniform glass transition temperature, and are prepared by radical emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture comprising ethylenically unsaturated, radically polymerizable monomers, using a polymer seed, less than 0.8 part by weight of emulsifier, and without protective colloids. The monomer mixture consists of a) at least 60 wt % of at least one monomer selected from the group consisting of C1 to C20 alkyl acrylates, C1 to C20 alkyl methacrylates, vinyl esters of carboxylic acids containing up to 20 carbons, vinylaromatics having up to 20 carbons, ethylenically ensaturated nitriles, vinyl halides, vinyl ethers of alcohols containing 1 to 10 carbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons having 2 to 8 carbons and one or two double bonds, and mixtures of these monomers, b) at least 0.1 wt % of at least one monomer having at least one acid group; c) optionally further monomers, the acid groups of the monomers b) being wholly or partly neutralized during the emulsion polymerization. The aqueous polymer dispersions can be used as adhesives, more particularly for the production of composite films.

Abstract: The present invention relates to aqueous acrylic polymer latexes, which are suitable as binders in coating compositions for providing flexible roofing. The present invention also relates to coating compositions containing such binders, which are suitable for providing flexible roofing. The aqueous acrylic polymer latexes have a glass transition temperature Tg of at most from −10° C., in particular at most −20° C., or, in case of a multi-stage polymer latex a weight average glass transition temperature Tg of at most from −10° C., where the polymer of the acrylic polymer latex has a carbon polymer backbone formed by polymerized ethylenically unsaturated e monomers M comprising acrylic monomers, and where the carbon polymer backbone bears functional groups of the formula (I) attached to carbon atoms of the polymer backbone *—C(═O)—O—[A-NH]nH (I) where the asterisk indicates the atom attached to a carbon atom of the polymer backbone, n is an integer, the number average of n in all functional groups of the formula (I) being >1, in particular at least 1.1 or at least 1.2 or at least 1.3, and A is selected from the group consisting of 1,2-ethandiyl or 1,2-propandiyl, where the functional groups of the formula (I) contribute to the total weight of the polymer in the acrylic polymer latex by 0.1 to 10% by weight.

Abstract: A process for preparing aqueous dispersions of polymers containing oxazoline groups, by aqueous emulsion polymerization initiated by free radicals. The polymerization are carried out in two stages. In the first polymerization stage, an α,β-monoethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one acid group, an monoethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one carboxylic acid amide group, a monoethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one carboxylic acid amide group are copolymerized. In the second polymerization stage, a monoethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one oxazoline group, a monoethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one carboxylic acid amide group and an ethylenically unsaturated compound are copolymerized with the final product from the first polymerization stage.
