Abstract: The present invention relates to bacterial strains, capable of utilizing glycerol as a carbon source for the fermentative production of succinic acid, wherein said strains are genetically modified so that they comprise a deregulation of their endogenous pyruvate-formate-lyase enzyme activity, as well as to methods of producing organic acids, in particular succinic acid, by making use of such microorganism. The present invention also relates to the downstream processing of the produced organic acids by cation exchange chromatography.

Abstract: Un procedimiento para la producción fermentativa de ácido succínico o una sal o derivado de este, procedimiento que comprende las etapas de: a. incubar una cepa bacteriana en un medio que contenga al menos glicerol como fuente de carbono asimilable y cultivar dicha cepa bajo condiciones que favorezcan la formación del ácido succínico deseado; y b. obtener dicho ácido succínico o sal o derivado de este del medio, en el que dicha cepa bacteriana es una cepa bacteriana de la familia de Pasteurellaceae, capaz de utilizar glicerol como una fuente de carbono para la producción fermentativa de ácido succínico, en el que dicha cepa contiene un gen mutado que codifica una enzima piruvato formato liasa con actividad disminuida o no detectable, cuyo procedimiento comprende la producción fermentativa de ácido succínico y el control del pH con NH4HCO3, (NH4)2CO3, NaOH, Na2CO3, NaHCO3, KOH, K2CO3, KHCO3, Mg(OH)2, MgH(CO3)2, Ca(OH)2, CaCO3, Ca(HCO3)2, CaO, CH6N2O2, C2H7N y/o mezclas de estos.
