Abstract: The invention relates to a process for preparing 3-heptanol or a mixture containing 3-heptanol, comprising the following step: (i) adding an aqueous solution (A), which contains one or more alkali metal hydroxides, to a mixture (B), which contains at least 2-ethylhexanal and 3-heptyl formate, characterized in that the concentration of the alkali metal hydroxide(s) in the aqueous solution (A) is at least 40% by weight.
