Um processo para a preparação de um ácido carboxílico alifático saturado com 3 a 5 átomos de carbono por oxidação do aldeído correspondente com oxigênio no qual (a) o aldeído correspondente é convertido com oxigênio a uma temperatura de 40 a 150 °C e uma pressão parcial de oxigênio de 0,001 a 1 MPa para obter uma mistura contendo o ácido carboxílico alifático saturado e = 2% em mol do aldeído correspondente em relação ao ácido carboxílico alifático saturado, (b) a mistura obtida na etapa (a) é tratada termicamente na fase líquida a uma temperatura de 80 a 250 °C e uma pressão de 0,1 a 2 MPa abs por 0,25 a 100 horas, e (c) a mistura obtida na etapa (b) é destilada em um aparelho de destilação para obter um destilado contendo = 90% em peso do ácido carboxílico alifático saturado e tendo um teor de oxigênio ativo de 0 a 25 ppm em peso com base no destilado.
