It relates to a process for the preparation of nanoparticles comprising exposing a solution to microwave irradiation, wherein the solution contains (a) an alcohol, (b) barium, (c) zirconium or hafnium, and (d) water and/or a hydroxide, wherein the molar ratio of the sum of water and the hydroxide to barium is 2 to 15.
