Abstract: A mixing assembly which transfers a number of nutritional fluids from individual source containers into a collection container while noninvasively sensing the type of fluid being transferred is provided. The mixing assembly utilizes a transfer set to establish fluid communication between the source containers and the collection container. A sensing assembly is configured to noninvasively sense a number of the types of fluid flowing through the transfer set to help to prevent improper mixing. For other fluids for which the sensing assembly alone may not be able to distinguish with the desired accuracy, the mixing device utilizes a method to approximate the flow rate of that fluid with the flow rate also providing an indication of that type of fluid. By combining the output of the sensing assembly with the flow rate determination, additional fluids can be identified.

Abstract: A device (10) for accurately transferring multiple individual fluids from multiple source containers (12) into a single receiving container (24). Fluid flows from the multiple source containers through individual fluid conduits (16) to a chamber (18) having a single fluid outlet conduit (22). The fluid outlet conduit is in fluid communication with a single receiving container. A pressure conduit (26) is in communication with the chamber for alternately creating positive and negative pressures in the chamber to cause fluid to flow from the individual source containers into the chamber, and to cause fluid to flow from the chamber into the receiving container in response to commands from a control means in the device (32).

A sensing assembly is configured to noninvasively sense a number of the types of fluid flowing through the transfer set (14) to help to prevent improper mixing. For other fluids for which the sensing assembly (200) alone may not be able to distinguish with the desired accuracy, the mixing assembly (10) utilizes a method to approximate the flow rate of that fluid with the flow rate also providing an indication of that type of fluid. By combining the output of the sensing assembly (200) with the flow rate determination, additional fluids can be identified. The assembly (10) includes a controller (41) that executes a number of routines that minimize the occurrence of false alarms, while insuring accurate and reliable compounding of prescriptions.

Abstract: A transfer set for use in an automatic compounding device comprises a manifold (67) having a plurality of connector conduits (68) a plurality of inlet tubes (43) connected to respective connector conduits. The manifold opens into a measuring chamber (18) which leads to a single outlet tube (22). Each inlet tube (43) communicates with a respective source container (12) through a spike (40). The measuring chamber is suspended from a load cell, in use. A differential pressure source is connected through a pressure conduit (26) to one of the connector conduits (68) for effecting fluid flow from selected source containers into the chamber (18) and fluid flow from the chamber through to outlet tube.
