Abstract: AN INDWELLING CATHETER DEVICE IS PROVIDED FOR USE IN AN INTRAVENOUS CATHETER PLACEMENT UNIT OR INFUSION SET TO PERMIT THE INTRODUCTION OF WITHDRAWAL OF LIQUIDS FROM A HUMAN BODY. THE CATHETER DEVICE INCLUDES AN ELONGATED FLEXIBLE TUBE SECTION OF A LOW FRICTION MATERIAL PREFERABLY FLUORINATED ETHYLENE PROPYLENE POLYMERS OR TETRAFLUOROETHYLENE POLYMERS HAVING A TUBULAR PREFERABLY THERMOPLASTIC COLLAR MEMBER MOUNTED THEREON WITH AN INTERFERENCE FIT ADJACENT AN ENLARGE FLANGE OF THE ELONGATED FLEXIBLE TUBE SECTION. A HUB ELEMENT OF A DIFFERENT HIGHER FRICTION MATERIAL, SUCH AS POLYETHYLENE IS INSERT MOLDED OVER AND AROUND THE TUBULAR COLLAR MEMBER AND ENLARGED INTERGAL FLANGE OF THE ELONGATED FLEXIBLE TUBE SECTION TO FORM A UNITARY CATHETER DEVICE. THE HEAT OF THE MOLDING OPERATION CAUSES A CHEMICAL BONDING OR FUSING OF THE MATERIAL OF THE HUB TO THE MATERIAL OF THE COLLAR SO AS TO PROVIDE A FLUID TIGHT BETWEEN THE HUB AND CATHETER TUBE.

Abstract: 1359902 Catheters BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc 11 Feb 1972 [3 March 1971] 6410/72 Heading A5R [Also in Division F2] An indwelling catheter 12 comprises an elongated flexible tube 16 with an integral flange 24 at one end, a tubular collar member 26 around the tube 16 and a moulded hub 14 surrounding and interlocking the tube and collar. The flange 24 preferably extends outwardly and then backwardly along the tube. The tube 16 may be of p.t.f.e. and may be radiopaque. The collar 26 may be of a thermoplastic material or synthetic rubber and may be heat shrunk onto the tube prior to insert moulding the hub onto the tube. The hub may be of polyethylene and may be transparent to enable the collar member which may be coloured to be seen. During the moulding of the hub the surface of the collar fuses with the molten plastics which forms the hub. A needle (18) extending through the catheter may be used for making a vein puncture and is then removed.
