Abstract: 1437554 Removing troughs from electrophoresis gel BAXTER LABORATORIES Inc 30 Aug 1974 [3 Oct 1973] 37919/74 Heading C7B A trough 27 is removed from a sheet 30 of electrophoresis gel, in which parallel through cuts are provided corresponding to the sides of the desired trough, by means of a hand tool 11 comprising a finger grippable handle 12 from one end of which extends a blade portion 14 terminating in a knife edge 25, and from the other end of which extends a flexible wire 13 terminating in a "U" 18 whose plane is transverse to the axis of the wire. The knife 25 is substantially the same width as the required width 28, 29 of the trough and the width between the legs of the U is less than this width while the overall width of the U exceeds the trough width. The legs are longer than the desired depth of the trough. A thermoplastics handle may be used with separate wire and blade portions embedded therein. Alternatively two folded fibreboard sheets may enclose a single wire which constitutes both the U and the knife. In use, the knife is inserted to produce cuts at 28, 29, following which the U is inserted into one cut and drawn through the side cuts whereby a gel strip is loosened and may be withdrawn by the U to leave a trough.
