Abstract: Apparatus and method of preserving life organs, the apparatus having an organ container in which the organ may be subjected to elevated pressure, a pump pulsatilely delivering perfusate into the organ and an oxygenator to oxygenate the perfusate effluent from the organ. A constant pressure bias maintains a minimum pressure on the perfusate between pulses. A fluid flow control system delivers driving fluid in a pulsed manner to the pump at a selected rate and at selected pulse duration. The method includes delivering pulsed oxygenated perfusate to the organ and uniformly conducting perfusate away from the organ and providing a constant pressure bias on the perfusate. Loss or gain of liquid volume caused by waste secretion by the organ is compensated for.

Abstract: 1314279 Organ perfusion apparatus BAXTER LABORATORIES INC 5 Oct 1970 [6 Oct 1969] 47190/70 Heading A2D An organ perfusion apparatus comprises a container for the organ, a circuit including the container for passing perfusate through the container, a pressure means for delivering the perfusate in a pulsatile manner to the container and means for maintaining between pressure pulses a pressure lower than the pressure on the perfusate in the container, oxygenating means in the circuit for oxygenating perfusate conducted from the organ and control means for determining the output of the pressure means, and including means for setting the period of each high pressure pulse. A suitable apparatus is shown in Fig. 1 wherein a pneumatic source 22 which preferably uses compressed oxygen communicates with a control unit 26 which pulses the oxygen and passes this gas to pump 40. Perfusate such as whole blood communicates with a simulated aorta 44 with each high pressure pulse through the line 38. Pressure of a preselected magnitude as determined by the control unit 26, exerts a biasing force upon the blood in the aorta. The blood then passes to a temperature bath 54 and thence to the organ in the container 38. This container may be of a transparent material to facilitate observation of the perfusion treatment. A accumulator 62 is connected to the organ to receive excreted products. The pulsed blood after circulation is carried to an oxygenator 66 to which fresh oxygen is communicated from control unit 26. The oxygenated blood is then passed to the simulated atruim 74 which communicates with the pump 40. To compensate for any reduction in blood volume in the system, there is provided a blood reservoir 78.
