Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for continuously producing nitrochlorobenzene enabling an easy waste treatment and recycling of waste acid, enabling the yield of o-nitrochlorobenzene of an objective product, and reducing m- nitrochlorobenzene of an undesired byproduct. SOLUTION: The method for continuously producing the nitrochlorobenzene by reacting chlorobenzene, phosphoric acid, nitric acid and water comprises (a) introducing the chlorobenzene, the sulfuric acid, the phosphoric acid and the water simultaneously or successively in an arbitrary order into a reactor having a mixing element, and mixing them so that the temperature of the reaction mixture is 10-80°C during the initial mixing, (b) regulating the content of the phosphoric acid in the reaction mixture based on the total of the sulfuric acid, the phosphoric acid, and nitric acid and the water during the mixing is 10-50%, (c) letting the reaction to progress under an adiabatic condition, (d) separating crude nitrochlorobenzene from the waste acids at the outlet of the reactor, and (e) subjecting the waste acids to recondensation and recycling the condensed acid to a nitration reaction. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a continuous isothermal process for preparing mononitrotoluene in the presence of a mixed acid component comprising a mixture of sulfuric acid and phosphoric acid with concentration of the resultant waste acid and recycling of the concentrated waste acid to the process. SOLUTION: (i) About 60-70% strength nitric acid and toluene are fed into a reactor and (ii) crude nitrotoluene is separated from the waste acid at a reactor outlet. (iii) The waste acid containing sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid and water is concentrated in a single-stage concentration to respective specific concentrations and (iv) the concentrated waste acid is recycled back to the reactor in a circuit to undergo a nitration reaction.

Abstract: A method for the continuous production of nitrochlorobenzene by nitration of chlorobenzene with a mixture of sulfuric, phosphoric and nitric acids and water under adiabatic conditions comprises: (1) mixing the reactants at 10-80 degrees C using a phosphoric acid content of 10-50 wt%; (2) separating the products at the reactor outlet; and (3) concentrating waste acids for recycling. A method for the continuous production of nitrochlorobenzene (I) comprises: (1) feeding chlorobenzene, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, nitric acid and water simultaneously or in any sequence into a stirred reactor and mixing at an initial temperature of 10-80 degrees C; (2) using a mixture with a phosphoric acid content (based on all acids and water) of 10-50 wt%; (3) carrying out the reaction under adiabatic conditions; (4) separating crude (I) from the waste acids at the reactor outlet; and (5) concentrating and recycling the acids to the nitration reaction.
