Abstract: 1,252,849. Bulb containers. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 16 Oct., 1970 [6 Nov., 1969], No. 49311/70. Heading A1E. In a process for the cultivation of bulbs use is made of a panel of low density hydrophilic polyurethane foam comprising a first part Fig. 1, having through holes a into the lower ends of which bulbs d are pushed tip first until their root attachment region is flush with the lower surface. To this surface a second part a, Fig. 3, is attached mechanically or with adhesive. The second portion retains the bulbs and is penertated by their roots as they grow after the foam is moistened.

Abstract: 1326161 Hydrophilic polyurethane foam BAYER AG 13 Jan 1971 [2 Feb 1970] 1651/71 Heading C3R Hydrophilic polyurethane foam having a density of 6-20 Kg./m. 3 is prepared by reacting: (a) one or more polyisocyanates, (b) water, (c) a polyol mixture of (I) at least one aliphatic or cycloaliphatic polyol of M.W. up to 500 and (II) at least one polyol having M.W. 500-5000. From 5-50 parts by weight of water are used per 100 parts by wt. of (c). I comprises 5-17À6% by wt. of the total of (a)+(b)+(c). The amount of polyisocyanate used is 20-80% of that theoretically required for reaction with (a)+(b). I may be diethylene glycol and/or 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane. In all the examples II is a polyether of ethylene diamine and propylene oxide mixed with a polyether of 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane and propylene oxide and/or a polylester of adipic acid, phthalic acid, glycerol and 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane. The polyisocyanate exemplified is polyphenylpolymethylenepolyisocyanate. Additional blowing agents, activators and/or stabilizers are also added.

Abstract: 1,147,761. Laminated vehicle frame. PARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 25 March, 1966 [26 March, 1965], No. 13420/66. Heading B5N. A self-supporting underframe for a vehicle comprises two shells, firmly connected at the edges thereof, the space between the two shells being filled with a hard foam core produced in situ from an expandable reaction mixture, the density of the core exhibiting local variations in a direction perpendicular to the shells and in at least one other direction parallel to the shells. The shells may be of metal, plastics material which may be reinforced with glass fibres), e.g. polyvinyl chloride or plywood and the underframe may be of such shape as to provide a front section, engine and gear-box compartments, wheel compartments, instrument frame compartment, the lower surface of the vehicle compartment, fuel tank compartment, luggage compartment and tail section. The foam core may comprise a phenol-formaldehyde resin, an epoxy resin, polyurethane or polystyrene, the local variations in density being effected by roughening mechanically the inner surfaces of the shells, e.g. by sand-blowing and by subsequently coating them with an adhesive in which three-dimensional glass fibre or synthetic resin fleeces or flocked carrier material, e.g. jute are embedded or on to which fibres are electrostatically flocked. The underframe may be divided into separate compartments, e.g. by bulkheads of foam. Reinforcements, e.g. layers of fibres, torsion bristles, honeycombs, sleeves or gauzes, cables, conduits, pipes and instruments may be incorporated prior to formation of the core. The undersurface is preferably sprayed with an elastomer.

Abstract: 1318736 Plant cultivation using foam substrates BAYER AG 14 Sept 1970 [1 Oct 1969] 43788/70 Heading A1E A process for raising and cultivation of plants using foam plastics substrates as nutrient soils has a series of nestable mouldings, of a size appropriate for a particular stage of growth of the plant, each moulding being inserted into the next larger moulding as plant growth progresses. Various shapes, materials, methods of manufacture and uses are disclosed, for example cubic mouldings to hold conifer seeds may be punched from a sheet of opencell polyurethane foam, which may include additives, e.g. plant foods or pesticides.
