Abstract: 975,665. Detecting components of a gas by electrical measurements. BECKMAN INSTRUMENT Inc. Nov. 28, 1962 [Jan. 15, 1962], No. 44980/62. Heading G1N. A conductometric analyser for a component of a gas stream has a pair of electrodes 66, 68 provided on a support 40, 42 down the face of which flows a stream of electrolyte adhering to the support, for example by capillary action, the gas to be tested being directed onto the stream of electrolyte so that the conductivity of the electrolyte gives an indication of the concentration of said component. In the embodiment shown the gas from a gas chromatograph is burnt at 36 and the ionization of the flame is tested in known manner to give an indication of carbon content at 34. The gas then passes up chimney 16 and is directed onto the stream of electrolyte flowing down the underside of two glass rods 40, 42 the conductivity of the electrolyte being measured by means of silver chloride coated silver electrodes 66, 68 mounted on glass rods 58, 60 to give an indication of sulphur and halogen content. The electrolyte, which may be pure water or hydrogen peroxide to oxidise the sulphurous acid to sulphuric acid to give a stronger indication of sulphur, is fed through a restrictor 76 and may run to a wick to produce a steady flow of electrolyte. If it is desired to make the conductometric analyser more sensitive to carbon, barium hydroxide can be used as an electrolyte. Three electrodes may be used if desired one above and one below the chimney so that the conductivity between the upper and central electrode may act as a comparison value for that between the centre and lower electrode in a bridge circuit. The electrodes may be positioned below the chimney or in a capillary tube at the end of the rods. Other possible forms of support for the electrolyte stream are also described. The electrodes 66, 68 may alternatively be gold or platinum and may be coated with an insulant except at their tips. The stream of electrolyte may be fed by a pump, gravity feed or by means of compressed inert gas in the container 72. The apparatus is stated to be particularly useful for detecting insecticides or fungicides in food.
