    Abstract: A time-of-flight mass spectrometer which employs a dynamic electric field to accelerate charged particles. For a sample containing various charged particles and given field parameters, each mass-to-charge specie of the sample has associated with it a unique flight time in the dynamic field. This flight time is derived from the interaction of the charged particles with the dynamic field. Various particles are resolved according to their mass-to-charge ratios by recording differences in their flight times in the dynamic electric field.

    Abstract: This invention combines an auxiliary apertured electrode with a quadrupole type mass filter. The assembly comprises a quadrupole arrangement with at least one of the poles of the filter extending beyond the others. Beneath the extended electrode is a V-shaped electrode having an aperture therein for the passage of ions. The extended rod and the V-shaped electrode forms a monopole configuration so that ions to be analyzed are introduced through the aperture in the V-shaped electrode and into the analyzing region at an angle to the central axis (Z-axis) of the quadrupole structure thereby reducing the effect of the fringing field.

    Abstract: The invention is directed to a liquid-level sensor utilizing a ferromagnetic fluid. The detector includes a magnetic member and a casing member, the two members being serarated by a clearance space and arranged for relative movement. A ferromagnetic fluid is disposed in the clearance space and is retained in position by the magnetic field of the magnetic member. The casing member supports sensor means for providing a signal representative of the relative position of the members. The provision of a ferromagnetic fluid in the clearance space acts as a lubricant between the two moving members allowing a smaller clearance to be used and thus increase the accuracy over prior art devices of the type where the fluid, the level of which is being sensed, fills the clearance space. In particular, the prior art devices have a tendency to stick when cold and the clearance space is occupied by high viscosity liquids.

The inventive devices include a ferromagnetic fluid physically arranged to be subjected to the pressure being monitored. Changes in the monitored pressure cause physical displacement of the ferromagnetic fluid. The displacements are detected by utilizing the magnetic characteristics of the ferromagnetic fluids to generate useful output signals.
