Abstract: 950,640. Electron multipliers. BENDIX CORPORATION. April 21, 1961, No. 14584/61. Heading H1D. An electron multiplier is formed with a continuous channel bounded by a secondarily-emissive surface 16, and having a length to width ratio at least equal to 10, situated between a source 22 of primary particles and a collector 18. Different voltages are applied to the opposite ends of surface 16 to create a longitudinal accelerating field within the channel. The particles are caused to strike surface 16 by the exclusive effect of the random initial velocity components of the primary particles without application of any transverse accelerating field. As shown, a glass tube 10 coated internally with a secondary-electronemissive, resistive material such as a tin oxide or a carbon compound is disposed between a photo-cathode 18 and an anode 22, potentials of - 1700, - 1500, +1500 and +1700 volts being applied to the cathode, the ends of the dynode and the anode, respectively. A plurality of tubular dynodes of narrow cross-section may be secured together in side-by-side relation between a photo-cathode and a fluorescent screen in an image intensifier tube, Fig. 4 (not shown). The light intensifier tube shown in Fig. 6, comprises a wafer 100, 0.012 inch thick, of secondaryemissive glass having a resistivity of 10 -11 ohm cm., and provided with perforations 0.001 inch in diameter, arranged between a photo-cathode 106 and a fluorescent screen 108. The wafer has silver coatings 104 on each side to which accelerating potentials are applied. In further embodiments of the invention, the facing surfaces of two flat, parallel plates or of two concentric cylinders are coated with secondaryemissive, resistive material to provide a multiplying region between a cathode and anode, Figs. 7 and 8 (not shown), and in the latter case the cathode may be annular. By use of secondary-emissive material which is also photoemissive, the cathode may be dispensed with, light being focused directly into the tube 10, Fig. 3.

Class 39(1) An electronic switching arrangement includes an electron multiplier, having a secondarilyemissive surface 46 along which an electron stream is propagated in a cycloidal path of increasing electron density by electric and magnetic fields, the output from which is switched to a selected one of a plurality of target electrodes 62 by selective energization of associated control electrodes 54. The target and control electrodes are distributed lengthwise of an elongated guide rail 50, longitudinally aligned with secondarily-emissive surface 46, the electric field being such that the electron stream is lifted gradually clear of the surface 46 to assume a position parallel to, but spaced from, the guide rail 50. As shown, the electron multiplier includes plates 26, 28 having resistive coatings and terminals 30, 32, 36, 40, 42, 44 to which potentials are applied to generate an inclined electric field. Each target electrode 62 is associated with a plate 60, narrowly coupled thereto, to reduce the influence of potential variations of the control electrodes on the potential of the target electrodes. The control electrodes 54, plates 60 and guide rail 50 may be channel-shaped and the control electrodes may have wires 56 attached thereto. Grounded shielding plates 52, 64 are provided on either side of each target electrode and its related plate 60.
