Abstract: 13,022. Bommer, E. June 26. Hinges; door-closing apparatus.-Relates to a double-jointed spring hinge with a special device to prevent sagging. The two spring joints of the hinge are at B, B, which represent the barrels containing the spiral springs. The barrels B, B are connected by a web A, and the flaps C, C' fastened to the jamb and door respectively are connected to the pintles D, D'. The pintles and barrels are connected by spiral springs concealed inside the barrels. The upper corners of the flaps C, C' are connected by a link F equal in length to the distance between the pintles D, D . This link F prevents sagging, and also ensures that only one joint of the hinge is in action at a time.

Abstract: 17,733. Bommer, E. July 30. Spring hinges.-Hinges of the kind described in Specification 25,135/04, for double swing doors are constructed so as to do away with, or to simplify, the ball bearings in connexion with the spring barrels, and so as to provide removable washers in the bearings for strengthening them and for taking up the wear. The spring barrels and their connecting - web may be formed by stamping and pressing from a single metal blank. As shown in Fig. 2, the barrels a, a' are mounted between flanges d, d , on the door casing and the door respectively, by the usual pintles and knobs, and the oppositely-wound springs s, s are secured to internal shoulders on diagonally opposite holders g, g , secured to the barrels by pins g and adjustable tension-collars f. Collars g on the holders g, g , by bearing on the plates d, d , are adapted to take up all the load. Rotatable or fixed washers may be arranged between the holders g, g and the plates d, d , on ball bearings e, Fig. 5, may be arranged between the two parts g , g of a split holder, the part g being connected by flanges and recesses n', n to the plate d'. A retaining-ring r embraces the parts g', g and prevents loss of the balls e. The fixed washers used are provided with bent-up lugs which engage similar recesses in the plates d, d . When the barrels a, a' and their connecting-web are made from one sheet of metal, which is stamped out to the shape shown in Fig. 12, the blank is bent to form first the barrel a and then the barrel a, as shown in Fig. 11. In this position, projections 4 on the second and third layers of the web coact with recesses 3 in these layers, and these interlock when the layers are pressed together, and projections 8 on the third layer take into slots 7 in the barrel a . The ends 1 of the first layer are then bent over to secure the webs in position, and these then take into recesses 6 in the third layer of the web. The connecting- web may be formed of four instead of three layers.
