    Abstract: A transmission clutch module (25, 125) includes an inner race (31, 131), an outer race (42, 142), a side plate (45, 145) and a plurality of pawls (34, 134) adapted to lock and unlock the races (31, 131, 42, 142). The inner race (31, 131) includes a plurality of spaced apart detents (32, 132) for engaging one end of the pawls (34, 134). The outer race (42, 142) includes radially aligned and spaced apart abutments (44, 144) for engaging the other end of the pawls (34, 134). Each abutment (44, 144) extends through one of the apertures (46, 146) in the side plate (45, 145). Each pawl (34, 134) includes a head (47, 147) accommodated in one of the apertures (46, 146) of the side plate (45, 145) and each pawl (34, 134) includes a neck (48, 148) that extends between the side plate (45, 145) and outer race (42, 142). The pawls (34, 134) engage edges of the apertures (46, 146) so the pawls (34, 134) can pivot between locked and unlocked positions without being connected to the side plate (45, 145) or the races (31, 131, 42, 142).

    Abstract: A clutch (10) for selectively preventing rotatory movement of a cogged gear (12) about an axis may include an actuator (20) and a pivotally moveable pawl (40) that is interactive with the cogged gear (12). A plunger (24) may be radially movable within and by the actuator (20). A pair of axially spaced sidewalls (16, 18) may include an opposed radially extending slot (52). A pawl pusher (50) may be radially movable between the plunger (24) and the pawl (40). The pawl pusher (50) may include a pair of axially extending wing portions (54, 56) that may be slidably supported in one of the opposed slots (52) to limit movement of the pawl pusher (50) to radial, only. Axial and/or circumferential force loads transmitted to the pawl pusher (50) by the pawl (40) may not be transferred to the radially movable plunger (24).

    Abstract: An actuator device for a selectable clutch having three or more clutch modes may include a piston disposed within the interior space of the actuator housing. Moreover, a first hydraulic pressure may be supplied to a first fluid passage to generate a first force acting on a first axial end of the piston. Additionally, a second hydraulic pressure may be supplied to a second fluid passage generating a second force acting on a second end of the piston. The first member and the second member may be configured to rotate relative to each other at a speed differential when the pawl clutch is disengaged.     Abstract: A selectable multi-mode clutch (20) is provided for use in a vehicular planetary powertrain (10) having a driveshaft (12) connected to driving wheels (14) to propel a vehicle. The powertrain (10) includes an electronically variable transmission (16) for speed ratio changes of the driveshaft (12); at least one motive power source (40) configured to supply rotary power to the driveshaft (12) via the transmission (16); and a selectable multi-mode clutch (20) interposed between transmission (16) and the at least the one motive power source (40). The transmission (16) has at least one planetary gearset (30) having an input end (24) and an output end (26). The output end (26) is coupled to the driveshaft (12), and the input end (24) is selectively coupled to the at least one motive power source (40) via the clutch (20). The clutch (20) has inner and outer races (21, 22) that can be locked together in a first clutch operating mode, and to freewheel with respect to one another in a second clutch operating mode.
