    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make possible shifting a wavelength of an optical signal with simple constitution by irradiating first, second coherent waves with wavelengths different from each other on a variable refractive index part, generating an interference pattern and generating a refractive index grating moving along a one-dimensional optical waveguide with the time with this interference pattern. SOLUTION: The variable refractive index part 1 is formed on a part of the one-dimensional optical waveguide 2 by a medium whose refractive index is changed by light intensity, and the grating is formed on the variable refractive index part 1. That is, two external interferable beams 3, 4 interfere with each other to form the interference pattern, and by modulating the refractive index of the variable refractive index part 1 with this interference pattern, the grating is formed there. When the interferable beams with the wavelengths different from each other are used as the interferable beams 3, 4, the interference pattern is moved with the time along the one-dimensional waveguide 2, and a Doppler shift occurs in the wavelength of the reflected signal, and the wavelength shift is realized. Thus, the optical wavelength is shifted with simple constitution.

    Abstract: 2137084 9325020 PCTABS00028 An optical communication system includes a head-end station (1), an optical fibre network (2) and a number of sensors and actuators (S, A) connected via the network to the head-end station. The head-end station (1) includes one or more broadband sources (3, 9) and is arranged to output a broadband signal onto the network (2). The sensors modulate the broadband signal received from the head-end station (1) and return narrowband components of the signal via the network to the head-end (1). There the different narrowband components are detected, for example using a demultiplexer (7) and the resulting signals processed by control electronics (8). The head-end station also includes an optical circuit arranged to split a signal from a broadband source (9) into different narrowband components. Electro-optic modulators (FOM) modulate the different narrowband components and the resulting narrowband signals are output onto the fibre network (2) and transmitted to the actuators. The electro-optic modulators (FOM) are operated by the control electronics (8).
