    Abstract: An improved knockdown spring unit (10) for seating furniture is disclosed wherein no parts are in point contact with each other and wherein only two types of lift springs and two types of platform springs are needed for the manufacture of all seating surfaces. Each of the two types of lift springs has a coil portion (26) with a eye (28) on end end that is aligningly connectable to the furniture frame and a stem (30) on the other end of the coil having a portion (31) which is positioned and aligned relative to the eye. The stem portion of the lift spring is aligningly attachable to the platform means through an alignment clip (25) having two mating surfaces (43,44) aligned with each other, one surface mating with the stem portion of the lift spring and the other with the platform means. The two types of lift springs differ in that one type also aligningly connects to a border wire while the other doesn't. Each of the platform springs takes advantage of the relaxed requirements of the platform means that the lift springs provide. Each platform spring comprises two ends having a section (41, 41') that can mate with an alignment clip (25) and a longitudinal body (49, 49') between the two ends made of a material that holds each end properly positioned. One type of platform spring for the platform means is fabricated by cutting the length required from stock comprises of a repetitive pattern of bends, each bend having a section (41') that can mate with an alignment clip (25). The other type of platform spring is fabricated to a specific length and has a section (41) that can mate with an alignment clip only at the ends of the platform spring.
