Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an aqueous dispersion of a water-soluble polymer.SOLUTION: In the aqueous dispersion of a water-soluble polymer of N-vinylformamide and/or N-vinylacetamide, the dispersion includes, based on 100 pts.mass of water, (A) 5-80 pts.mass of a polymer that is water-soluble, includes an N-vinylformamide unit and/or an N-vinylacetamide unit, and has a particle size of 50 nm-2 μm, and (B) 1-50 pts.mass of at least one polymeric dispersant that is incompatible with the water-soluble polymer (A) in an aqueous solution.
Abstract:
A process for preparation of paper, pasteboard, or cardboard involving cutting of the paper pulp, addition of microparticles of cationic polymer, and a finely divided inorganic component after the last cutting step and before pulp swelling, dewatering of the pulp, and sheet formation and drying of the sheets is new. A process for preparation of paper, pasteboard, or cardboard involving cutting of the paper pulp, addition of microparticles of cationic polymer, and a finely divided inorganic component after the last cutting step and before pulp swelling, dewatering of the pulp, and sheet formation and drying of the sheets. The cationic polymer of the microparticle system is cationic polyacrylamide, polymer containing vinylamine units, and/or polydiallyl dimethylammonium chloride containing polymer of mean mol.wt. 500,000 Dalton, and maximum charge density 4.0 meq/g, where the microparticle system free from polymers of charging density (sic) more than 4 meq/g is used as the retention agent.

Hydrophobically modified polymers containing vinylamine or ethylenimine units and obtainable by reacting (a) polymers containing vinylamine or ethylenimine units with (b) compounds of the formula R-A-(EO, PO, BuO)n-X (I), where R is C4- to C26-alkyl or C4- to C26-alkenyl, A is O, NH or COO, EO is an ethylene oxide unit, PO is a propylene oxide unit, BuO is a butylene oxide unit, n is from 1 to 250 and X is a functional group which can be covalently bonded to an OH group, process for the preparation of hydrophobically modified polymers containing vinylamine or ethylenimine units by reacting polymers containing vinylamine or ethylenimine units with a water repellent of the formula I and use of the polymers thus obtainable as an additive to paperstock in papermaking.
Abstract:
Aqueous dispersions of water-soluble polymers of N-vinylcarboxamides, which contain, as a stabilizer, water-soluble, crosslinked graft polymers which are obtainable by free radical polymerization of compounds having at least two ethylenically unsaturated double bonds in the presence of polyalkylene glycols, are prepared by free radical polymerization of N-vinylcarboxamides in an aqueous medium in the presence of said stabilizers and are used as drainage aids, flocculants and retention aids, as wet and dry strength agents and as fixing agents in papermaking.
