Abstract: In accordance with an embodiment of the present invention, a method of operating a rotorcraft (101) includes operating the rotorcraft (101) in a speed control mode, where a speed of the rotorcraft (101) is proportional to a pilot control command; detecting a high longitudinal acceleration condition; upon detection of the high longitudinal acceleration condition, temporarily disabling the speed control mode and stabilizing the rotorcraft (101) while the speed control mode is disabled; and reestablishing the speed control mode when a measured longitudinal acceleration of the rotorcraft (101) falls below a first threshold.

Abstract: Systems and methods of operating a tiltrotor aircraft (100) include providing a control system (200) that includes sensors (204, 206) and/or gauges (208) that provide feedback regarding hub shear forces in rotor systems (108) of the aircraft (100) that produce aeroelastic instability known as whirl flutter. Feedback from the sensors (204, 206) and/or gauges (208) is communicated to a flight control subsystem (202) that includes an algorithm that provides a cascading set of responses to control whirl flutter and a failsafe that adjusts operational characteristics of the aircraft (100) in response to the continuation or excitation of the whirl flutter.

Abstract: An electric reaction control system (100) that can selectively expel a "burst" or "puff' of air to alter the orientation of the aircraft (10) during flight. An aircraft (10) incorporating ducting (12), an air compressor (14), an electric motor (16), and a plurality of nozzles (18, 22, 24) can facilitate in-flight trajectory modifications. When an air burst is needed to provide thrust for the purposes of reaction control, nozzles (18, 22, 24) are selectively opened and closed to provide roll, pitch, and yaw of the aircraft. The ERCS (100) can facilitate an electric aircraft (10) that would be very agile and very light, utilizing electric power, as opposed to jet power.
