Abstract: A system for irrigating a surgical site is disclosed having a lightweight battery powered pumping unit (10) that is directly connectible to an irrigation source (12), and a handpiece (14) that either irrigates the site with irrigation fluid from the pumping unit or aspirates spent irrigation liquid and biological debris from the site. The handpiece communicates with the site through an elongate wand that passes through an incision to the irrigation site. A spike (18) extending upwardly from a pump head portion of the pumping unit detachably connects the pumping unit to the irrigation source.
