Abstract: A coherent optical communication system is disclosed comprising, a first transceiver, a second transceiver, and an optical transport medium coupling the first transceiver with the second transceiver. The first transceiver is configured to (i) receive a laser signal from a master laser source as at least one phase synchronized pair of coherent tones, and (ii) modulate data onto a first tone of the at least one phase synchronized pair of coherent tones for transport as a first data signal to the second transceiver over the optical transport medium. It is also configured to (iii) transmit a second tone of the at least one phase synchronized pair of coherent tones over the optical transport medium as an unmodulated first local oscillator signal to the second transceiver.
