Abstract: An optical network communication system includes an optical hub, an optical distribution center, at least one fiber segment, and at least two end users. The optical hub includes an intelligent configuration unit configured to monitor and multiplex at least two different optical signals into a single multiplexed heterogeneous signal. The optical distribution center is configured to individually separate the at least two different optical signals from the multiplexed heterogeneous signal. The at least one fiber segment connects the optical hub and the optical distribution center, and is configured to receive the multiplexed heterogeneous signal from the optical hub and distribute the multiplexed heterogeneous signal to the optical distribution center. The at least two end users each include a downstream receiver configured to receive one of the respective separated optical signals from the optical distribution center.

A network implementing a universal data link includes a first communication device configured to convert transmission entities into data symbols, a second communication device configured to convert the data symbols into transmission entities, at least a first communication medium and a second communication medium communicatively coupled between the first communication device and the second communication device, and a first physical-layer translator configured to translate data symbols without converting the data symbols into transmission entities. In order to reduce processing time and end-to-end latency, the physical-layer translator only performs demodulation and modulation operations, optionally also equalization.

Abstract: An optical network communication system includes an optical hub 442 at the head-end, an optical distribution centre 404, connected by at least one fibre segment 408, and at least two end users 406 downstream of the distribution centre. The optical hub includes an intelligent configuration unit (not shown) which multiplexes at least two different optical signals 441(1), 441(2), 441(3) into a single multiplexed heterogeneous signal. The optical distribution centre demultiplexes the heterogeneous signal. The heterogeneous optical signal comprises an optical signal of a first type and an optical signal of a second different type, each selected from the following: an analogue optical signal 418, an intensity modulated signal suitable for direct detection (e.g. PAM, RZ or NRZ), a signal suitable for coherent detection (e.g. BPSK, QPSK or higher order QAM), or a differentially modulated signal (e.g. DPSK or D-QPSK). Also claimed is a method of assigning wavelength spectrum based on characteristics of the fibre segment and parameters of the at least two different optical signals. The distribution centre may include a wavelength filter 446 and a downstream optical switch 448.

Abstract: This application discloses distributing a heterogenous optical signal over a fibre segment of an optical network. The heterogeneous optical signal comprises an optical signal component of a first type and an optical signal component of a second different type, each selected from the following: an analogue optical signal, an intensity modulated signal suitable for direct detection (e.g. PAM, RZ or NRZ), a signal suitable for coherent detection (e.g. BPSK, QPSK or higher order QAM), or a differentially modulated signal (e.g. DPSK or D-QPSK). The invention relates to assigning wavelength spectrum to each component signal of the heterogenous optical signal, based on a characteristic of the fibre segment and parameters of the component optical signals. The fibre segment characteristic may be fibre type, fibre length, implementation of amplification or loss devices, implementation of wavelength filters or splitters, or network topology. The parameters of the component optical signals may include optical power levels, wavelength, wavelength spacing, modulation format, modulation bandwidth, channel coding/decoding, polarisation multiplexing or forward error correction.
