Abstract: An image processing apparatus is composed of an image memory comprising a plurality of memory elements, and a processor unit comprising a plurality of processor elements. By suitably engineering the arrangement of the image memory of memory elements, the arrangement of the processor unit of processor elements and the connections among the memory elements and processor elements, it is possible to realize, through a simple construction, high-speed image processing such as image density conversion, image color conversion, image masking, image spatial filtering, image enlargement, image reduction, image rotation, image compression, image extension and image color correction. Also provided are an image processing apparatus for a color image, composed of a plurality of image memories and a plurality of processor elements, and a generalized, multifunctional data parallel processing apparatus capable of processing a large volume of data at high speed.

Abstract: When image data is reduced by using only the most significant bit or bits for each pixel density value. e.g. a `"1" or a "0" over the whole 256 levels represented by an 8-bit density value, there is a need to convert the reduced bit values to values having higher numbers of bits, for example when performing colour processes such as masking. Therefore such processing is accomplished by taking into account the values in a pixel window (e.g. 5x5 about a central pixel in question), and performing the processing so as to arrive at a processed value having a greater number of bits. Thus the value of the central 1-bit pixel may be converted to its 8-bit equivalent (equivalent value) and corrected with an 8-bit value derived according to the count of the "1"s in the window (smoothed value). In a subsequent masking operation in which masking matrix calculation is performed, the value of a masked component is derived using the equivalent value thereof and the smoothed values of the other two components.

Abstract: In a digital copying or facsimile machine, where Moiré patterning is to be avoided, but characters and line drawings are to be reproduced with high definition, an edge detector 1, 2 controls S3, S4 the ratio with which a smoothed image singal S6 and an edge emphasized image signal S11 are mixed 305. Edge detection circuit 1 uses linear differentiation with a peak response frequency lower than that of a mesh image which is not to be treated as an edge containing image, whilst edge emphasizer 5 uses quadratic differentiation and has a higher peak response frequency than that of the edge detector 1. In an alternative either one of the edge emphasized image signal S11 or the smoothed image signal S6 are selected (Figure 27A). The edge emphasis circuit 302 may be omitted, the input image signal S1 then forming an input to multiplier 8 (Figure 33).
