Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a liquid crystal element which hardly generates a fluctuation of a cell thickness with simple constitution and a device formed by using this element. CONSTITUTION:This liquid crystal element has substrates 11a, 11b which have a pair of electrodes 12a, 12b facing each other and a chiral smectic liquid crystal 15 which is disposed between a pair of these electrodes and exhibits a state of bistable states. The inside surfaces of the substrates 11a, 11b are so subjected to orientation treatments that the moving direction when the one state of the bistable states is placed under an electric field is the same direction as the moving direction when the other state is placed under the electric field. The orientation treatment of a frame region 32 is varied from the orientation treatment of a display region 31. The same effect is obtd. by improving driving conditions, the oriented films of the frame region and the orientation treatment method.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To precisely position every ink head in a short time by providing the mechanism, which is capable of independently adjusting plural ink jet heads in the direction normal to a scanning direction, to a holding mechanism. SOLUTION: A head unit 5 is provided with relative position adjusting mechanisms of an R head 31 and a B head 32 using a G head 30, which is arranged in the center, as a reference. In other words, a micrometer head 33 adjusts the relative position of the head 31 in an X direction and a piezoelectric element 35 finely adjusts the relative position of the head 31 in the X direction. A micrometer head 38, which is used to adjust the R head in a G direction, uses a wedge similar to the X direction adjustment. Reletive position adjustment of each head and the position adjustment of the entire head unit are conducted by detecting the gaps in the X direction between each θ, R-G and G-B from ink landing positions, the amount of the deviation in the θ direction and the positional relationship with respect to a stage employing an ink land position detection optical system and the relative position adjusting mechanism of each head and the head unit position adjustment mechanism are driven accordingly.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing apparatus for a color filter, applicable even to a large-sized color filter base, while reducing a maximum size of the manufacturing apparatus to as small as an extent as possible. Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the variation of cell thickness due to the movement of liquid crystal and the accompanying yellowing phenomenon by forming a peripheral area on the outside of an effective optical modulation area and setting the pretilting angle of liquid crystal molecules in the peripheral area larger than that of the effective optical modulation area. SOLUTION: A pair of upper and lower substrates 11a, 11b are oppositely arranged and stuck to each other by a sealing material 17. An effective optical modulation area, a 1st peripheral area and a 2nd peripheral area are formed as areas surrounded by both the substrates 11a, 11b and the sealing material 17. The 2nd peripheral area is formed on a part or all of the outside of the 1st peripheral area. Since the liquid crystal of the 2nd peripheral area is orientated at random without requiring an optically uniaxial property, orientation processing is not applied to a part corresponding to the 2nd peripheral area of the substrates 11a, 11b. The pretilting angle of liquid crystal molecules in the 1st peripheral area is larger than that of liquid crystal molecules in the effective optical modulation area.

Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a low cost and highly reliable device by designing it so that the amount of a shift between an alignment mark on a substrate and the reference position of an image drawing head is detected by a displacement detecting device and the detected amount of a shift is corrected. SOLUTION: When a substrate 5 is mounted on an XY stage 3, a Z tilt direction is matched by a Z tilt stage so that the face of the substrate 5 stays within the detection range of an alignment detecting optical unit 6. In addition, either or three directions X, Y, θ is detected so that an alignment mark on the substrate 5 meets a reference position with the help of the alignment detecting optical unit 6. Based on the detection results, a shaft in the θdirection is corrected by a θ stage and a shift in the X, Y directions is corrected by the XY stage 3. Further, a clearance between the substrate 5 and an image drawing head 4 and their tilt are sought by an optical unit 7 for Z detection, and an image is drawn using the image drawing head 4 while controlling the Z tilt stage so that the clearance is constant. Thus it is possible to obtain a low cost and highly reliable device for manufacturing a color filter.
