Abstract: Image generators each produce images on several recording carriers, and a transfer device transmits the images from the carriers onto the same recording material. The image generators and the transfer devices are so controlled that preset images are generated in certain sections of the recording material.The generated images are divided in an orthogonal direction w.r.t.the recording material transport direction. Position deviations are measured by determining the recording positions of the preset images.A control provides changes of the starting times of the image generators in dependence on the output signal of the measuring appts.Pref. the image generators are designed for use of a laser beam in the image generation on each recording carrier

Abstract: In an image forming apparatus for overlaying plural images eg component colour images in succession at different image transfer stations 211C-211K onto a recording sheet, a downstream image overlay is controlled in timing by an upstream image overlay, in order to avoid positional aberrations in the superposed multiple images. Provision is made for forming predetermined images at each image transfer station across the recording sheet, for measuring positional errors of the predetermined images and for regulating the start timing of image formations in dependence thereon. The image formation is prohibited when the correction of the positional errors is not possible i.e. when the start timing delay for an image formation lies outside a correctable range.
