Abstract: In an STN type liquid crystal display device, two retardation plates (112, 113) are located one on each side of an STN liquid crystal cell (101). A twist angle m0 of the liquid crystal material (109) is set to fall within the range of 200 DEG to 240 DEG , and the DELTA n.d value of the liquid crystal is set to fall within the range of 700 nm to 900 nm (measurement wavelength: 589 nm). With respect to the direction of aligning treatment of an incident-side substrate (104), the light-transmitting axis of a polarizer (110) is inclined at an angle falling within the range of 140 DEG to 180 DEG , the light-transmitting axis of an analyzer (111) is inclined at an angle falling within the range of (270 DEG -¦ phi 0¦/2) +/- 10 DEG , the phase delay axis of the first retardation plate (112) is inclined at an angle falling within the range of (180 DEG -¦ phi 0¦/2) to (180 DEG - ¦ phi 0¦/2) + 30 DEG , and the phase delay axis of the second retardation plate (113) is inclined at an angle falling within the range of (180 DEG -¦ phi 0¦/2) to (180 DEG -¦ phi 0¦/2) - 30 DEG . The DELTA n.d value of each of the first and second retardation plates (112, 113) is preferably set to be 1/2 (i.e., 2 in 1/2 represents the number of retardation plates) a value obtained by multiplying the DELTA n.d value of the liquid crystal with 0.80 to 0.95.

The common straight line part 35a is arranged at the inside of the upper side of the pixel electrode 34, and wholly overlapped with the upper side part of the pixel electrode 34. Also, the auxiliary capacity electrode 35 is arranged so as to have the area overlapping with the side part of the pixel electrode 34 and the area positioned at the outside of the side part of the pixel electrode 34, and the auxiliary capacity electrode 35 is not provided in a scanning line 31 side.

The polarizer 2 is so disposed that its transmission axes 2a intersects nearly orthogonally with the orientation treatment direction 7a on the incident side of the liquid crystal cell 1. The analyzer 3 is so disposed that its transmission axes 3a intersects nearly orthogonally with the transmission axis 2a of the polarizer 2. The perpendicular axis phase plate 4 has the refractive indices in three directions; a stretching direction refractive index nx, intra-surface orthogonal direction refractive index ny and thickness direction refractive index nz. The refractive indices in these three directions satisfy the relation nx=ny=nz. Then, the difference in the phase difference of the light transmitted perpendicularly in the liquid crystal cell and the light transmitted diagonally therein is compensated.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To widen a visual field angle and to display images with a high contrast by providing the above element with polarizing plates arranged on at least either side of a liquid crystal cell and plural thin films which are laminated on the outside surfaces of these polarizing plates and vary in refractive index. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display element is composed of a pair of transparent substrates 11, 12, the liquid crystal cell 19 which is composed of liquid crystals 13 enclosed between these substrate substrates 11 and 12, a pair of the polarizing plates 14, 15 which are arranged across the liquid crystal cell 19 and low reflection films (antireflection films) 16, 17 which are arranged on the outside surfaces of the polarizing plates 14, 15. TFTs 21 as active elements and pixel electrodes 22 are arranged in a matrix form on the one transparent substrate 11 and the oriented film 23 is arranged thereon. These low reflection films 16, 17 are formed by alternately laminating plural TiO2 films and plural SiO2 films. Since the TiO2 and the SiO2 vary in the refractive index, the refraction and reflection of light arise at the boundaries between the TiO2 films and the SiO2 films and the reflection of incident light is lessened.
