Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method comprising catalytically oxidizing a hydrocarbon- based feed, particularly a lower alkane into the corresponding oxyester intermediate product in high conversion and selectivity and also at a practical reaction rate, and converting the intermediate product to a heavier liquid hydrocarbon. SOLUTION: This method for the above conversion involves using at least catalytic amounts of specific class [B] metal and/or metal ion defined as 'soft' or 'borderline' based on the Pearson's definition; wherein the desirable catalysts include metallic Pd, Tl, Pt, Hg and Au; if desired, the oxyester may be converted to another intermediate product such as an alcohol or halide; the oxyester, alcohol and the other intermediate product can be converted, as necessary, to liquid hydrocarbon(s) including gasoline.
