Abstract: A lubricated spline joint (30) for providing a viscous damping function includes a first member (32) defining an internal spline (62), a second member (34) defining an external spline (64) engaged therewith, a seal ring (76) between the members (32, 34) at one end of the splines, and a radially inwardly facing chamber (80) at the other end which is exposed to lubrication fluid. The improvement features an internal barrier (84) for assuring a fixed internal radius R and thus a preselected centrifugal pressure head of the fluid mass (86) in the chamber (80) and about the splines, and a plurality of venting passages (94) located radially outwardly of the radius R for continually exhausting fluid from the splines as a result of centrifugal force so that fresh and/or less aerated fluid is circulated through the splines.

Abstract: A coupling apparatus (10) for coupling a driving mechanism (12) to a driven mechanism (16). The coupling apparatus (10) resiliently transmits torque, dampens backlash motion and lubricates the interface between a gear (22) drivingly connected to the driving mechanism (12) and an annular plate (20) rigidly connected to the driven mechanism (16). The coupling apparatus (10) includes a resilient torque transmitting mechanism (24) located in aligned bores (48), 64) in the annular plate (20) and the gear (22), a mechanism (24) located in aligned bores (48, 64) in the annular plate (20) and the gear (22), a mechanism (26) for dampening backlash motion, and a mechanism (28) for lubricating the interface between the annular plate (20) and the gear (22) which includes a fluid passage (52) in the annular plate (20) communicating with the interface and connected to a source of lubricating fluid.

Abstract: A fuel injection system (10) is disclosed comprising a high pressure actuating fluid pump (332), a first plurality of hydraulically-actuated unit injectors (18), and a first high pressure actuating fluid manifold (334) arranged in fluid communication with each of the first plurality of unit injectors (18). The system further comprises a second plurality of hydraulically-actuated unit injectors (18), a second high pressure actuating fluid manifold (336) arranged in fluid communication with each of the second plurality of unit injectors (18), and a device (338) for controlling Helmholtz resonation of pressure waves between the manifolds (334, 336) and/or between the pump (332) and either manifold (334, 336). Hydraulically-actuated unit injector fuel systems, having multiple manifolds for supplying high pressure actuating fluid to the unit injectors, can establish a Helmholtz resonance effect between the manifolds. The present invention controls the creation of Helmholtz resonance between the manifolds (334, 336) and also between the pump (332) and either manifold (334, 336).
