Abstract: An apparatus (10) for controlling both pump displacement of a variable displacement hydraulic pump (24) and the quantity of fuel delivered to an internal combustion engine (16) for the purpose of delivering a requested hydraulic flow at a highly efficient operating point. The apparatus (10) includes an underspeed control means (36) for reducing pump displacement in response to the operating speed of the engine (16) lugging below a desired operating speed. Additionally, a fuel control means (34) operates to reduce the quantity of fuel delivered to the engine (16) in response to the operating speed of the engine rising above the desired operating speed.

Abstract: A method and apparatus (10) for laterally severing an asphalt layer (24) to form a ribbon (29), separating the asphalt ribbon (29) from an underlying base (26), elevating the separated asphalt ribbon (29), and fracturing the elevated asphalt ribbon (29) by bending same. A cutting member (34) having a leading edge (36) which is insertable between the asphalt ribbon (29) and base (26) provides separation thereof along a lateral line. A ramp (38) and elevating structure (40) elevatingly guide the separated asphalt ribbon (29) into a pair of breaker drums (68, 70) which are rotatable in opposite circumferential directions (E, F). Each breaker drum (68, 70) has protruding teeth (94) which are arranged in laterally separated circumferential rows (76, 92) with the teeth (94) in adjacent circumferential rows being preferably arcuately offset. Corresponding circumferential rows on the opposed breaker drums (68, 70) are laterally aligned and the teeth (94) in those rows engage opposite surfaces of the asphalt ribbon (29) during rotation of the breaker drums (68, 70). The teeth (94) in corresponding rows on the respective breaker drums (68, 70) alternately engage opposite surfaces of the asphalt ribbon (29) at longitudinally spaced locations to bend and fracture the asphalt ribbon (29) by displacing it in generally opposite transverse directions (G,H) at the engaged locations.

Abstract: A buckle member (26) that is moved toward a tongue member (32) to achieve a latching engagement between the two. A latch release member (136) is provided within the buckle housing (44) and is movable in a direction away from the tongue member (32) to release the connection therebetween. This direction of movement is the same as the direction of separation between the buckle member (26) and the tongue (32). Both operations may be accomplished in one motion and require the use of only one hand.

Abstract: Welding system having automatic groove tracking and adaptive groove filling capabilities. Data produced by a coordinated laser spot projector (1O &cir& /, 12) and TV-scanner (12) combination is determined to an Intel 8O &cir& /85 computer (28) to provide a substantially continous analysis of groove locations in a three-axis coordinate system as well as groove depth and area. Location information is fed to an LSI-11 computer (38) to control the tracking function through coordinate axis servo-type drives (46) and to control a fourth-axis or "swing" function which provides freedom between the welding torch (14) and the optical system (1O &cir& /, 12) which leads the torch by several inches. The groove depth and are information is also fed to the LSI-11 to control the welding parameters, i.e.; deposition rate and voltage and produce the desired weld along the groove.

Abstract: Conventional direct injection internal combustion engines will not completely ignite and burn relatively lower-cetane-number fuels such as 100 percent methanol or ethanol because the fuel spray injection pattern usually cannot carry or propagate a flame to all the injected fuel which is typically made up of individual fuel streams which are separated by pockets of fuel-deficient intake air. The present fuel combustion system (10) includes a fuel ignition-initiating device (26) such as a glow plug (70) and apparatus (98, 102) for interconnectedly contacting and continuously bridging all of the individual fuel streams (66) with an auxiliary cloud (94) of well-atomized fuel. In this manner, a flame initiated by the fuel ignition-initiating device (26) is rapidly and completely propagated via the auxiliary cloud (94) of fuel to all the individual fuel streams (66).

Abstract: A tire rim assembly (16) permits inflation of a tire (10) mounted thereon only when the components constituting the structure are assembled in a locking configuration. The elastomeric seal (26) is located by a locating surface (52) of the annular split lock ring (28) and elastically deformed by engagement of the inclined ramp surface (44) to establish an air tight seal between the elastomeric seal (26), the second groove (34), and the inclined ramp surface (44) when the lock ring (28) is properly installed. When the lock ring (28) is omitted or improperly installed the elastomeric seal (26) is free of compression and will not establish an air tight seal.
