Abstract:
The present invention relates to individual cellulose nanofibrils decorated with magnetic nanoparticles made of transition metal ions or an oxide thereof, as well as a method for the preparation thereof. The method of the present invention is performed in an oxidizing atmosphere, which gives a complete oxidation of the metal ions to hydroxide/oxide complexes and affords a strong attachment of the obtained complexes to the cellulose nanofibrils. The resulting metal ion complexes attach to the nanofibrils prior to the formation of the magnetic nanoparticles, thus preventing associations and agglomerations of the precipitated magnetic nanoparticles. Applications for the present invention include water purification, catalysis and biomedical applications.
