Abstract: A film transport mechanism (10) for extracting film (16, 24) from one or more cassettes (12, 14), and for slicing a sheet of the film and storing the sheet at a temporary storage apparatus (42) until the sheet is to be loaded. The mechanism (10) includes a film guide (20) which moves between two positions to alter the path length of film passing over it. As film (16, 24) is extracted the film (16, 24) exerts a force on the film guide (20) causing the film guide (20) to move. When the film (16, 24) is cut the force of the film guide (20) disappears enabling the film guide (20) to return to its relaxed position into the path of the film (16, 24) so as to increase the path length and thereby retract the film (16, 24) passing over the film guide (20).

Abstract: An optical scanning system (10) for scanning images from film transparencies or reflective copy, and for reproducing images onto film or photosensitive paper to prepare films, printing plates and the like. A platen assembly (16) having two platens (34, 36), each platen having an image area, is rotatable between two positions to selectively locate one of the platens in an orientation for scanning an image area of such platen. A scanner (44, 46) traces scan lines (60) across the image area in a first direction (y) as a gantry assembly (18) transports the scanner over the image area in a second direction (x). To load film, the scanner is automatically moved out of the platen's path of rotation, a sheet of film is automatically raised to the platen which by vacuum force holds the film to the platen, and the platen is rotated to bring the film into a position to be scanned.
